Why CHOICE?

CHOICE Humanitarian has been working to eliminate extreme poverty since 1983 under the direction of James B. Mayfield, PhD, an expert in the field of international rural development.

About CHOICE Humanitarian

CHOICE Humanitarian is a leadership organization that works in remote villages all around the world. Strong local leadership means communities can develop their own vision, goals, and plan to work their way out of extreme poverty.

With 35 years of experience working to end poverty in Kenya, Bolivia, Guatemala, Mexico, Nepal, Ecuador, and Peru, CHOICE partners with rural communities where most villagers live on less than $1.90 a day. The Leadership Model of Development CHOICE utilizes is holistic, integrating five core areas: economic development, health, education, environment, and culture preservation.

CHOICE has learned how to combine the most effective elements of both grassroots and top-down approaches to bring about powerful, sustainable change. Villages identify and manage their own development process and drives the initiatives that will resolve the problems they face.

What is Extreme Poverty?

Extreme poverty is defined by the World Bank as living on an average of US $1.90 a day or less. They estimate that 1.44 billion people live in this condition. However, extreme poverty is multidimensional and measured beyond income. Some of the additional indicators reflecting acute deprivations are with respect to health, education, and standard of living. This is measured by the Multidimensional Poverty Index. Based on this index, 1.6 billion people are identified as multidimensionally poor.

Extreme Poverty is Intolerable and must be Eliminated

Our vision is a world free from the ravages of extreme poverty, where all people are treated with dignity and valued for who they are and the unique contribution they bring.
